Since it’s after Thanksgiving, I’m throwing some optimism your way. Here are some things, in no particular order, to be thankful for.
1. Good headphones, which makes good music that much better and annoying bus rides into personal concerts.
2. Doritos Locos Tacos, both for being awesome and for being a symbol of what can be accomplished in this world- anything fantastic and stupid can and should be enjoyed and made on its own merits.
3. New socks are super great, and you get to feel like a fancy guy. My socks have little mustaches on them, and I love them.
4. Little kids are super adorable, and the best part is you don’t have to take care of them now, so that’s pretty much the best of both worlds, right?
5. Showers are awesome, and you can totally take them whenever you want, like a fancy person with good hygiene.
6. American television is unusually good these days, and you can watch all of it online pretty much whenever you want on your magical computer box.
7. You totally have awesome leftovers.
8. Technology is great and will probably improve dramatically while we’re still young enough to enjoy it. For example, we’re decently close to the sort of “virtual reality” video-games everyone’s wanted since we saw it in movies. The Wii lets you swing for a sword! Sure, it’s not the same, but we’ve started- it’s only getting better from here.
9. In pretty much any situation, you can eat the cuisine of any sort of culture in a way that a hundred and twenty years ago would’ve been impossible for anyone but a world-traveling superstar. And you can get it delivered.
10. We’re the most educated world that we’ve ever been, which is cool, because there was a time where literacy meant you were fancy.
11. Yo, the Bird Flu was never a thing! Neither was Y2K! Or the Mayan Apocalypse! That’s awesome, guys.
12. Breaking Bad is a show that exists.
13. We got a fourth season of Arrested Development.
14. Statistically speaking, if you’re reading this, you are wealthy and healthy in a global perspective, because you are literate and you have internet.
15. Christmas and New Years are coming up! I don’t celebrate Christmas, but there’s something to be said for all the things it brings- Starbucks drinks, nice movies, sweet music, goodwill towards your fellow man, etc. Plus, they sell tons of discounted candy afterwards.
16. Remember how as a kid salad sounded like the worst thing in the world and now a good salad is awesome? That’s because as you get older, you change, and you gain access to new things end experiences you’re ready to enjoy now. You’re going to change, and that means new stuff is coming that you’re going to like.
17. Red Sox won the World Series!
18. The wild success of Social Media, in a world where the internet makes so much obsolete, means that human kindness and relations is still a fundamental part of our lives.
19. If you really wanted, you could make S’mores tonight. It might not be super easy, but you could.
20. If you really need to, you can reach out to strangers, in person and on the internet, and while some might be awkward, or some even mean, some will help, because even if man is not inherently good, some people are, and that alone means you can surround yourself with good and pursue goodness in your own life, or, like, you could also take a nap and eat good snacks. Or both! Life is cool, yo.
