College Graduation Gifts

The season of college graduations are upon us. Although you might be envious of those crossing that stage and leaving you in all the madness that is college, it’s still courteous to show your support with a graduation gift. But what do you get the person that is about to be working at a “real” job and making way more money than you at the moment… wait why aren’t they buying you a gift? Never mind, let’s focus on the task at hand. Here is a list of affordable graduation gifts for your college graduate friends and family.

1. A token to remember the best time of their life.

New graduates still love their university and are going to need some new “adult” things with their college emblem. Consider a tie, a business card holder, or maybe a simple piece of college apparel jewelry. If all that is too fancy for you, I’m sure your chosen school also makes alcohol related gifts. You know, so they can continue the party just in a more classy way!

2. A guide to being an adult.

Graduation can be a confusing time when the world of young adult and just plain adult intersect. Questions like: Is it still appropriate to wear athletic apparel all the time? What size should my t-shirts be if not XXL? How the heck do I buy a car? Why does FICA keep taking all my money? And Budget, what does that mean? may arise. Consider filling your graduate in on the details. Make your own Guide to Being an Adult gift Basket filled with all the things an adult might need or leave it up to the experts. One of my favorite gifting books for graduates is Adulting: How to Become a Grown-up in 468 Easy(ish) Steps by Kelly Williams Brown.

3. Memories of your friendship.

Many times graduation comes with moving to new cities and leaving friends. For all you Parks & Rec fans, here’s a good time to bust out your Leslie Knope skills… scrapbooking!! If that’s too much work, even just a nice framed picture of your college crew. Your graduate can hang this at their new place or office and be reminded of the good times.

4. Something to do in all their free time.

What? A world exists without the constant loom of knowing that you should be doing something more productive? Let’s hope that your graduate’s new job is 9am-5pm leaving them so much room for activities. Help them fill that free time with a hobby gift. Think about what they like or always wished they had time to do and get them something related to that. Maybe an accessory to go with an existing hobby. Let them know that from now on it’s not all work!

5. Alcohol.

When all else fails a nice bottle of their favorite alcohol never disappoints!
