Being eco-conscious is a big deal nowadays. Whether you’re looking out for Mother Nature or your wallet, here are 5 amazingly simple tricks to decrease your carbon footprint and increase the thickness of your wallet!
- Unplug! This is so simple, yet is often overlooked. When you’re not charging your cell phone, laptop, lamps, or fans, unplug them from the wall. Unplugging your devices saves wasted energy that you’re not using.
- Turn off the tap! When you’re lathering your locks or shaving your legs, turn off the water. Turning off running water for these shower activities can save you over $100 a year on your water bill!
- Wrap your windows! When it begins to get cold in the fall, head to your local hardware store and pick up a window insulating kit. There are various brands to choose from, such as 3M, so there are options for different budgets. Put the plastic wrap around the windows to help seal up any slight gaps or pesky drafts. This will keep your apartment much warmer and will help lower heating costs.
- Keep the fridge stocked! The items in your refrigerator will stay cold and radiate the chill throughout the fridge. This helps the fridge go back to its normal temperature quickly after the door is closed. Doing this will save you some dough on your energy bill, reduce your energy consumption, and kept you fed!
- Take it easy with laundry! This one seems obvious, but laundry is a big culprit in excessive energy consumption. Only do laundry when you have full loads, so you’re not wasting water multiple times a week on half loads. Another tip regarding laundry is to wash your clothes in cold water. This is all a matter of preference–but it will save you money. When using cold water, the mechanical energy needed to heat the water won’t be necessary, and this greatly reduces your energy consumption. (And, consequently, your bill!)
