5 Tips to Help You Survive Your First Few Weeks at College

It’s that time in your life when you leave your parents’ home and head off to live on your own at college. Being homesick is a common thing among first year college students; some may experience it more than others. Some people may choose to attend college closer to home and others farther away. Although it may be difficult at first, there are many ways to ease the stress of starting that new chapter in your life.
Here are a few common tips to take in mind when heading off to college:
- Explore your college campus – Walk around campus with some friends to get to know where places are located; find out where are your classes are, bus routes, dining halls, libraries and rec center
- Meet new people – Get to know not only your roommates, but people in your dorm hall is a great way to ease into the college life; many dorm halls will host events during the first week of school where you can interact and meet new college students- go to as many as you can
- Join a club/student organization – there are tons of student organizations on campus ranging from various interests; find one or multiple ones you like and get involved- attend meetings, club events and socials
- Stay connected to your family – make sure to keep in contact with your family; continue a close relationship with your parents and any siblings you have as they will offer encouragement
- Be yourself – Don’t try and be someone else; you may feel pressured to drink or attend a party with a bunch of strangers; allow yourself to keep an open mind and get out of your comfort zone while also staying true to your moral values
Adjusting to college life is a challenging roadblock in someone’s life, but following these simple tips will help ease the transition from living at home to being on your own.
