Maybe you’re a devoted believer that checks The DailyHoroscope app every single morning, or perhaps you’re a skeptic who believes that people put too much stock in the planets and stars. Either way, you have to live under a rock to be totally clueless about what your astrological sign is and what it says about you. Even if you tend to associate those obsessed with astrology with your best friend’s super bohemian mom, who frequents antique shops and the local farmer’s market, the truth is that younger generations—like Millennials, and now Gen-Z—find a strange comfort in knowing how their stars align.
Of course, this isn’t astrology’s first moment, and it certainly won’t be its last. The practice has been around in various forms for thousands of years. But the New Age phenomenon really found its footing in 1960s and 70s U.S. culture—as if anyone’s really surprised. Since then, astrology and horoscopes have had a significant hold on society.
I mean, admit it, after you go on your first date with that someone you totally dig, you know you look up how compatible your two astrological signs are romantically, so why not consider the same when you’re selecting a college major?
With that in mind, uCribs begins a new series: The Best College Majors for You Astrological Sign. Since I am a Cancer myself, naturally, I wanted to begin with the Water signs, who are normally seen as intuitive, artistic, and compassionate. With these traits, it should be relatively simple to find one’s place in the job market, right? Well, in today’s economy, anything is game (I’m looking at you, cryptocurrency) but it’s always helpful to consult the stars before making a huge, life-changing decision—like, you know, deciding what you’re going to do for the rest of your life. #theexistentialcrisisisreal
Cancer (June 22-July 22)
Hey, fellow Cancers, if you’ve read any (and I mean, any) horoscope about yourself, you know that you are often depicted as the oversensitive crybaby—not only among your Water sign counterparts, but on the whole astrological spectrum. Fact is, there is way more to you than just being an overly sensitive homebody.
As the ruler of the zodiac’s fourth house of home, family, and hospitality, Cancers do well working in education as well as the service, tourism, and medical fields. As the zodiac’s “mother” sign, they cannot help but nurture anyone who crosses their path. Their innate intuition coupled with their deep sensitivity typically leads to success in any career where Cancers get to showcase their softer side.
Cancers also demonstrate excellent focus in all their work and passion projects, which allows them to excel in the corporate world as well. This coupled with their unrelenting diligence put Cancers in the running to achieve just about anything they put their mind to—and no, I’m not being biased. Let’s just say there are a fair number of corporate execs and entrepreneurs that are Cancers. Finally, Cancers tend to thrive in any creative environment, making them ideal candidates for writing, editing, graphic design, and other art-based careers.
BEST MAJORS FOR CANCER: Education, English, Interior Design, Visual Art, Psychology, Graphic Design, Pre-Med, Culinary Arts, or Business.
Scorpio (October 24-November 22)
Unlike Cancer, Scorpio thrives on competition. Although they fail to separate themselves from the tendencies of a Water sign completely— in the fact that they still crave security—nothing motivates Scorpio more than the promise of power, financial stability, and notoriety. They are the true “go-getter” positioned among the other two Water signs, often showing an innate feistiness more indicative of an Aries.
Scorpio rules the eighth house, which is associated with finance and property, making them ideal for pursuing careers associated with different realms of finance such as real estate, accounting, banking, or investment management. Since the eighth house is also connected to biological reproduction, Scorpio is a very body-conscious sign. They are more adept to promote ways of self-care, so they excel in the fields of nutrition, fitness, and physical therapy. They—like most Water signs—tend to thrive in the artistic and creative fields.
BEST MAJORS FOR SCORPIO: Business, Accounting, Nutrition, Psychology, Music, Finance, Kinesiology, or Economics.
Pisces (February 20- March 20)
Although all water signs excel in artistic careers, Pisces takes the cake as the ruler of the zodiac’s twelfth house of dreams, creativity, and healing. Pisces have dominated just about every creative field from modeling (Cindy Crawford) to film directing (James Wan) to sketch comedy (Jordan Peele). Photography or graphic design can also be an excellent route for the excessively creative Pisces.
Pisces, like their fellow Water signs, are also highly compassionate. They would make headway in the non-profit or educational sectors as well as in the tourism and hospitality industries. Coupled with their compassion, Pisces’ final house of the zodiac is also associated with the last stages of life, and for that reason, many Pisces go on to become nurses, social workers, and so forth—often thriving in the medical or holistic fields.
BEST MAJORS FOR PISCES: Photography, Fashion Design, Nursing, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Film, Biology, or Psychology.
