Stay Safe for Halloween

Nobody wants to hear the lecture about being safe, but there are plenty of weirdos in the world that can make your night go from Hallow-Happy to Hallow-Hell. Here are a few pointers to make sure you and yours have a great time and make it home without Michael Myers on your tail.

  1. Watch your poison–Halloween is full of yummy potions to drink, but keep your claws on your glass. If you need to slip away for any reason, take your drink with you or have a trusted friend watch it carefully. If your drink has been left unattended, get a new one!
  2. Watch yourself on the road–With all of the potion pouring going on, a lot of people will be under the drunk spell! Statistics indicate that 38% of Halloween fatalities are caused by impaired driving. Not only in cars, but pedestrians being struck as well. Try to attend a party or club closer to home, and if you’re going to be drinking, take a cab. Many college campuses offer safe ride programs to help students get home. Check into your campus safety office to see if your school participates in such a program.
  3. Check your treats–If you can still get away with Trick or Treating, double check all of your goodies. Don’t eat unopened candy and always wait outside to receive it. Candy tampering may not happen often, and though rare, it can still happen. Don’t be a victim.
  4. Costume Functionality–Uncomfortable heels, tight clothes that limit movement, or masks that impair vision are no nos. If you can’t walk well in heels, please don’t use Halloween as your night to start trying. Drinking and walking sometimes don’t mix, and you don’t want to end up with a broken ankle! All of these can lead to injuries or inability to get away from iffy situations.
  5. Keep your phone charged–Try to keep some functional percent of your battery left on your phone throughout the evening. If you need to call a cab to get home, a friend, or emergency services for any reason, you’ll be hard pressed if your cell is dead.

Halloween is one of the most fun holidays for almost everyone, especially college students. There’s no reason not to enjoy it to its fullest while still being safe! Happy Halloween everyone!
