Flu. That dreaded word that sparks panic at colleges everywhere. Many people think flu is just like a cold, but unfortunately, are wrong. The flu is usually easy to get over but it can also be dangerous, which is why you’ll likely see lots of “stay home if you’re sick” signs around campus soon. Here are a few ways to help protect yourself against flu and prevent the spread.
- Wash your hands often! Every time you use the bathroom, blow your nose, rub your eyes, or have physical contact with someone else. Obviously it’s impossible to be near soap and water at all times, so pick up some hand sanitizer to toss in your backpack. They have ones that you can clip onto your backpack as well, so you can grab some on the go. You can find these at places like Target, Walmart, and drugstores like Walgreens. Or if you want some really yummy smelling ones, check out Bath and Body Works! I usually stock up this time of year (since the holiday ones are fantastic). Check out bathandbodyworks.com for more info.
- Get vaccinated! Sure, shots suck (no, not the ones you take at the bar), but if you get yourself vaccinated, you’re helping your body build an immunity against the virus. There is also a nasal spray that you can take in lieu of an injection. Ask your doctor what option is best for you.
- Ask your doctor about antiviral medicines. If you’re exposed to someone with the flu, you can probably get an antiviral, such as Tamiflu, to help prevent getting it yourself.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes, nose, and mouth. This is one of the fastest ways to introduce germs into your body.
- Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing. Keep your germs to yourself!
- Eat healthy, get plenty of rest, keep active. Taking care of yourself properly can help keep germs away.
- If you feel sick, stay home. Stay in bed and get plenty of rest. Not only will you help yourself, you’ll help others by not exposing them. If you don’t feel better in 24 hours, head to the doctor. Your doctor can test you for the flu with a nasal swab and give you medicines to help with the aches and pains and fever. Drink plenty of water and get lots of rest.
Flu can become a serious problem. If you have a compromised immune system or don’t seek proper medical treatment, you may get very sick from the flu. Now, this isn’t a scare tactic to freak you out about getting the flu. You won’t die if you get the flu, but you can become miserably sick which can land you in the hospital. Don’t let flu turn into a life threatening illness. Take care of yourself!
By following the steps above, you’re taking the right action in preventing and combating the flu. Stay safe and healthy this flu season!
