Should You Have a Pet in College? 5 Things You Need to Consider

Most people love pets and have had one at one point or another. If you’re aching for a furry pal to call your own while away at school, there are a few things to consider.
- Do you have time? Pets require a lot of attention. Not only do they need exercise, but they need mental stimulation as well. They need lots TLC to stay happy and healthy.
- Do you have the finances? Having a pet costs money and they don’t come cheap. Not only will you be feeding them, but you’ll need to figure in toys, grooming, and medical care. They need to go to the vet at least once a year for their vaccinations, and it’s not a bad idea to have money saved up in the event of an emergency.
- What is your housing situation? If you’re living on campus, having a pet is an automatic no (unless it’s a goldfish). If you’re in an apartment off campus, do you have roommates? How would your roommates feel about a fuzzy new addition? Everyone has to be on board before you bring Fluffy home.
- Do you have the patience for a pet? Pets are wonderful, but just like children, they can be messy, loud, and irritating at times. Can you handle a needy dog or cat while doing homework? Although they may be irritating at times, you must remember that they are animals and it isn’t intentional. Do you have the cool to deal with it appropriately?
- Consider what type of animal and breed you are choosing. There are certain breeds of dogs that are extremely human dependent, like Labrador retrievers. They need constant exercise and stimulation or they become restless and can destroy things to get attention. Cats are a little easier to handle as they are more independent than dogs; that’s not to say you can just put out some food and water and call it good. A cat will still need playtime and interaction to be social and happy.
I love my pets, but I’m also a commuter student. I’m not at school or even right by my school 24/7. I have more time and resources to devote to them. It’s not always easy, but in the end, to me, it is totally worth it. It can be different for others, though. Everyone’s experience isn’t the same! I highly suggest you do lots of homework and ask a lot of questions before investing in an animal friend.
