Snow Day 101

Snow day

So, you have a snow day.

I know, I know. It’s late; I should’ve put this up in November, but it’s snowing now and Facebook is letting me know it’s a snow-day again. At this pace, I’m assuming this is the opening to a Game of Thrones style “Winter is coming” scenario, so we may as well enjoy it.

So, it’s a snow day. What do you do?

1. Go Out

Here’s the number one rule of snow days: you have to go outside.

Hold up. I hear the protests; it’s cold out, it’s snowy, it’s so cozy in here. Well, you’re right. But you have the whole day to think about and you need a break in the middle. Here is a sample schedule for your snow day.

Sleep in, big breakfast, loiter around, Go outside and play in the snow/ come back/ get cozy again/drink earlier than you should/videogames/dinner/chilling/movie/sleep.

That day sounds pretty ideal, but most of it involves just sitting around. Sitting is cozy- especially on a snow day- but it’s important to earn that coziness. Otherwise you’ll be stir-crazy and bored by 5:30, and that’s no way to go about it.

So go out. Play in the snow, go to the gym, visit a friend, go out for a late lunch or early dinner. When you break up your day, it’s a lot more fun.

2. Dress the Part

Sweatpants, cozy novelty socks, a sweatshirt, etc. If you spent your snow-day in khakis, did it ever really happen?

3. Drink

But not what you’re thinking.

It’s going to be very easy to have your first beer of the day; the sun goes down early, there’s nothing to do, and it’s a celebration. Plus, Doug already posted three empty cans to Twitter and it’s, like, 1:48.

Forget about it. Doug has a problem, first of all. When I say drink, I mean tea and hot chocolates. Sip on delicious, non-alcoholic and warm drinks. You’re going to be so cozy, you guys.

Then, when it’s late and you have a friend or two, slip Peppermint Schnapps into the hot chocolate and whiskey into the tea. Don’t have either? Go out and get some. Step one, after all, is to have an outside activity or errand.

4. Be Productive

Your snow day is going to be a lot more fun if you can add the phrase “…and I got my work done” at the end of it. Trust me on that. Nothing is worse than waking up from a snow day to find yourself in worse academic shape than you started it in.

You have a day off, dude. Use it on both ends.

5. Read

You’re going to spend a lot of time on screens today, with the beautiful snow, curl up in your cozy clothes, get your hot chocolate, and read a book.

Don’t have a book? Go out and get one (see step 1.)

Reading is also the best way to act super smug about your snow day. You’ll be cozy, productive, feel classy, have a great picture for Instagram, and you’ll have a better reason to start drinking later. It’s a perfect fit.
