College is a very expensive investment and there are tons of ways to finance it. There are loans, both federal and private, and then there are gift monies such as grants and scholarships. Gift monies are the best way to go about college, and while grants are typically income based, scholarships are all up to you. If you’ve got the drive, the GPA, and killer writing skills, I highly encourage you to go for it.
For the past year or so, a friend and I have been involved with a site, Dosomething.org. Do Something encourages community involvement and activities that make a difference in the world. Every time you take on a new task and complete it, you’re entered for scholarship money. Not only can you maybe get free tuition money, you can do something to help the less fortunate, animals, the elderly, and ultimately yourself. Trust me, you’ll feel super awesome after making birthday cards for homeless children in your area. This is the one place I highly suggest checking out for potential scholarships.
Another site worth checking out is bigfuture.collegeboard.org. Big Future’s College Board is just for college students like yourself. They have a scholarship search that you can customize to your GPA, needs, major, etc. There’s a lot you can find and apply to here.
Lastly, check your school’s resources. Universities are typically divided into separate colleges; College of Business, College of Health, etc. Your college may have scholarships for students in your major. Your university as a whole probably offers scholarships as well, so check into it!
Every little bit counts, so don’t get discouraged if you receive a small scholarship; not everyone is going to get a full scholarship to pay for their entire 4 years. Instead, be proud that you’ve worked so hard to get where you are. You can do it!
Check out dosomething.org and bigfuture.collegeboard.org scholarship-search to get started!
