Working Out: Apartment Edition

With Summer around the corner the only beer you have should be in your hand, not hanging around on your gut. However, stomping around to a P90X DVD or salsaing to a Zumba playlist isn’t an option for you apartment dwellers with neighbors right below you. Workout without getting kicked out with these 5 apartment-friendly exercises.

1. Plank w/ Arm Raise

Plank w Arm Raise

This move works your upper back, chest, core, obliques and glutes. Starting in a pushup position, brace your abs and make sure your body forms a straight line. Raise your right arm in front of
you and hold for 15 seconds before switching sides. Do 10 – 15 reps on each side.

2. Squat w/ Overhead Press

Squat w Overhead Press

Target your shoulders, glutes and legs with this quieter alternative to your typical weighted overhead squat. Resistance bands put an end to the hassle of heavy weights clunking on the ground after every couple of reps and angry neighbors knocking from the ceiling below. Begin standing with feet shoulder width apart, holding resistance bands amongst your shoulders, and slowly start to lower legs and sit back while pushing arms up overhead. Repeat for 15 reps.

3. One Legged Wall Sit

One Legged Wall Sit

Tone your quads, hamstrings and let’s not forget about that bootay with a one legged wall sit. This move packs twice the burn of a regular wall sit. Lower down, back braced against a wall, until your legs are at a 90 degree angle. Lift your left leg in front of you and hold for as long as you can handle. Switch sides and repeat for 3 reps.

4. Medicine Ball Sit Up Pass

Medicine Ball Sit Up Pass

There’s nothing like a medicine ball sit up to light your entire core on fire (in a good way). Don’t let your roomie off the hook with this one! Lay down while holding a medicine ball overhead, do a sit up and pass the ball to your roomie as they sit up to grab it from you. Go back and forth for 10-20 reps.

5. Reverse Lunge w/Punch and Front Kick

Reverse Lunge w Punch and Front Kick

This kickboxing style workout allows you to get your heart pumping without all the thumping (I swear I didn’t mean to do that). Step your right leg behind you and dip down into a lunge. While lunging down, use your left arm to punch across the right side of your body. Then bring your right leg out into a kick. Do 10 reps and switch sides.

These 5 moves pack all the heat without the noise, so your sound sensitive neighbor no longer qualifies as an excuse for your weak workout game. So pop a squat, brace your abs, and tiptoe your way to a killer bikini bod this Summer.
